The Girl in the Blue Coat by Monica Hesse

Set in World War II-era Amsterdam, the main character Hanneke fights her own resistance of the Nazis as a black market worker. She is able to find what others cannot for the people who are willing to pay for rare luxuries like chocolate or meat. Hanneke’s talent is delivering the impossible, until Mrs. Janssen asks her to find a person instead of an item: a hidden Jewish teenager who has seemingly vanished into thin air from a secret room in Mrs. Janssen’s home. Hanneke must try to solve the mystery and find the missing girl before the Nazis do, but how? I recommend this book to fans of Ruta Sepetys’ Between Shades of Gray or Holocaust historical fiction. This book is truly incredible, intoxicating, and intense--it’s one of the best I’ve read all year.

Trouble is a Friend of Mine by Stephanie Tromly

I love the opening lines of this book: Of course I didn't like Digby when I first met him. No one does. This book made me laugh out loud multiple times--which is an impressive feat all in itself for a middle school teacher contending with spring fever and apathy. The playful wit and banter of both main characters, Zoe and Digby, is thoroughly enjoyable and carries the reader along into the heart of the story. Digby involves Zoe in his investigation of a local missing teen, Marina Miller. Before Zoe knows it, she's on "Planet Digby" and there's no return. I adored this book and feel that it has something for all readers--sharp wit, adventure, mystery, and humor. I would recommend this book to my 7th and 8th graders; it's great for kids who already understand and enjoy sarcasm and quirky characters. Originally, I thought the story left readers with at least one major loose end, but then I found out there is another book in the works. Can. Not. Wait.

The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey - Book Two of The Fifth Wave

Buckle your seatbelts because this book is a ride! The Infinite Sea continues where The Fifth Wave left off and the storyline is just as gripping as the first book. Yancey is incredibly crafty with mind twists, horrific alien technology, and suspense. Beware if you are a reader who has children--this book will keep you up at night--both because you can't stop reading it and the events are haunting. I recommend this to readers who like action, suspense, survival stories, mystery, and a dash of science fiction. Warning: You cannot put this one down. And then you have to wait for book three...

Space Case by Stuart Gibbs

This book is the first in what appears to be a new series by Belly Up author Stuart Gibbs: the Moon Base Alpha series. Living on the moon is actually pretty boring for 12-year-old Dashiell Gibson until he uncovers a murder at the base and is ordered by the base commander to stop investigating--or else. This fast-paced, sci-fi mystery unfolds over the course of just a few days and definitely kept my attention. I recommend it to readers who like mystery, space travel, action, humor, and futuristic stories. I will definitely be booktalking this title in my classroom after winter break!

Shelter by Harlan Coben

If you like mystery and fast-paced action, you will love this book. Meet Mickey Bolitar--his dad just died, his mom is in rehab, and he's stuck living with his uncle Myron. Mickey doesn't have much to be happy about--until he meets his girlfriend Ashley at school orientation. Ashley is the bright spot in Mickey's days, until she abruptly disappears. Now Mickey will stop at nothing to find Ashley--and to figure out why crazy old Bat Lady said that his dad is still alive....

I recommend this book to readers who like mystery, action, and a small bit of romance. I really liked it, but I'm stingy with 5 star ratings. 4 out of 5 stars!
